Oaky's 'Bunkka'
Paul Oakenfold: 'Bunkka'
(Perfecto)
Paul Oakenfold’s first album is an artefact brimming with ‘guest stars’

Disc-jockeys have come a long way, as Fatboy Slim remarked once: Paul Oakenfold has been turntabling discs for a decade and his career has included producing and re-mixing. Now, although it might be overdue, Oaky’s got something different going – a debut album as a fully-fledged artiste. And, ‘Bunkka’ is a very noteworthy effort.

On his journey through life he’s met many an artist and could avail himself of being able to ring them up and ask to be guest vocalists. Thus, on the opening track, ‘Ready Steady Go’, we have Asher D of So Solid Crew dropping rhymes, followed by Carla Werner on French-sprinkled pop of ‘Southern Sun’; Hunter S. Thompson, the legendary writer, delivers ‘Nixon’s Spirit’… In general, a very intriguing choice of vocalists.

There is also Perry Farrell (of Jane’s Addiction), lending his larynx to ‘Time Of Your Life’, Nelly Furtado and Tricky get united for the concluding ‘Harder They Come’, and it is an inspired pairing. But the guest list doesn’t end there, there is Ice Cube on ‘Get Them Up’, a rather catchy and assured rap from the master hip-hopper and Grant Lee Phillips on ‘Motion’ that sounds like Depeche Mode being lead by Bono’s vocal.

Music scope of Oaky is respectably wide and mainly dance-based but elements of electronica, pop, soundtracks, rock… even WorldMusic, on ‘Zoo York’. Jazz-funky and ethereal is Emiliana Torrini fronted ‘Hold Your Hand’; Björk’s fellow-country woman’s had an album out and is a name worth memorising. All adorned with intriguing effects, sampled voices and beats to quits… An album of club persuasion for rock listeners

‘Bunkka’ is a more of a chill-out disc, all nicely laid-back and loose, Oaky doesn’t do intense and beat-frantic… It is a dope-crop.

8/10
