Vincent Clarke & Martyn Ware: ''Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle' ' (Mute)
3-dimensional music for headphones and imagination in colours
The makers of this album, Vincent Clarke (of Erasure, usually) and Martyn Ware (Heaven 17), wish you to know: "This album is intended to promote profound relaxation. It is best experienced with the use of headphones, and at the point of near-sleep at the end or beginning of the day. The original 2-hour version of this work was performed only once in the Undercroft of the Roundhouse, Chalk Farm, London, in February 2000. It featured a circular white cloth-lined room 12 meters in diameter, suffused with the colour referred to in the title of each segment. The colours were programmed to cross-fade imperceptibly, therefore achieving an almost infinite variation of hue during the event."
Furthermore, "This album was recorded using logic audio platinum. The output from this was then spatialized using Animix 30 visualisation software and the Lake Huron 3D audio processor. The technique and technology used in creating this album have only been used previously on the CD 'Pretentious' by The Clarke and Ware Experiment, released by Mute Records in 1999."
If you are still with moi, there you have it, the 74minutes sonic-trip over six tracks, six colours, each subtitled as a guide, for instance -'Yellow: You Are On A Beach'. 'Red: You Are In The Womb' gets underway with a heartbeat initially but later deeps into darkness and intensity to recall moments from '2001: A Space Odyssey', the birth of'Starchild'.
'Blue: You Are Underwater' really is a submerged sonar exploration, its undercurrent is repeated tonal motif; 'Green: You Are In Forrest' takes a stroll in the woods and #6 is reworking of the opening 'White', this time subtitled 'You Are In Heaven Again', to close the circle. 'Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle' at times sounds academic but there are plenty meditative moments.
These interpretations of colours certainly feel 3 dimensional and headphones are obligatory. Turn the lights down, turn on imagination and chill...
8/10
