dEUS: 'No More Loud Music'
(Universal Island)
dEUS compile some of their finest moments for your enjoyment and delectation

Live albums are generally nothing more than a way to end a contract or cheapo recycling of material slightly justified by being a document of sorts but compilations are a definite con! It is a rip-off (songs already issued and re-marketed for extra-cash squeeze) that, with a little patience, one can burn for a couple of quid! But, sometimes…

dEUS is this time and it is a compilation that is as fresh and delightful as a kiss of a stranger on a New Year’s frosty morning, energetic like a child after a rest, as inquisitive as any talented person should be… Eight years down the career road this is a collection of the band’s singles from Europe and America. And what a valuable collection it is.

Omitting the first set of songs (‘Zea’ EP, 1993 and ‘My Sister Is My Clock’ EP, 1995), the parade starts with three cuts from the debut album proper, ‘Worst Case Scenario’. There are also three tracks from the second opus, ‘In A Bar Under The Sea’, a handful from the most recent ‘The Ideal Crash’, plus a brand new song, ‘Nothing Really Ends’. It is a delicate song that might point to the band’s future direction.

The dEUS’ blend is the proverbial ‘everything thrown in including the sink’, but it is so true: they can be gentle and romantic, poppy and rocking, cinematic and intense, loud and beautifully minimal. The Antwerp band’s soul, Tom Barman, has taken time off after the 1999 tour to prepare his full-feature directorial debut and to work on an electro-acoustic project Mangus; a couple of members have open a bar in their hometown and Julle De Borgher is writing a soundtrack for ‘Resistance’.

dEUS will not be back together and in a studio until the end of 2002 and to be without their eclectic, eccentric and exotic music – aside the companion ‘No More Video’ DVD in January 2002 – it’s gonna be a long, quiet vanishing…

8.6/10
