‘Blade 2’
(Priority/Virgin)

Soundtrack albums are a tricky affair at the best of times but when you group together artists from the opposing musical genre (alike on ‘Spawn’ and ‘Judgement Night’ OSTs) to produce something different, the crossover is hard at work to convince. Of 14 tracks here, there are only few that really offer something that is not trad-reworking of clichés: Roni Size & Cypress Hill (‘Child Of The Wild West’), Massive Attack & Mos Def (‘I Against I’) and Paul Oakenfold & Ice Cube (‘Right Here, Right Now’).

The rest is… short of something, including Gorillaz & Redman, Moby & Mystikal… And, under no condition play the bonus track of ‘Buppy’s ‘Mind What You Say’ – it is diabolical!

5/10

Gorillaz
‘G-Sides’
(Parlophone)

This is Japanese-targeted release, which the artwork doesn’t let you forget, and, one suspects, if their label owners (EMI) weren’t in fiscal pithole, we would probably not see this near our CD players. As it is, you know all the music, the mixes, all the vids… But, it is good to have it in one handy package because they are better than most of the human acts.

‘Roswell’
(Nettwerk/Regency)

The long-running teen sci-fi series gets its soundtrack released and it is obviously headed with Dido’s title song, ‘Here With Me’. Other artists that contributed to the TV’s soundtrack are Coldplay, Ash, Zero 7, Travis, Sheryl Crow, Doves, Stereophonics… Cool? No, not really. Bonus track is Dido’s song in the ‘Chillin’ With The Family’ mix)… pleeeze!

Have you noticed that if it is pop with sex-appeal, then it’s Kylie; when there is pop without it, is it Dido. Time for something new, girl!

6/10

Embrace
‘Fireworks (Singles 1997-2002)’
(Hut)

Embrace bow out of their contract from Virgin subsidiary (before moving to Travis-home of Independiente) and it is a collection of what they’ve achieved. Don’t get fooled with ‘New material’ tag, it ain’t – it’s been issued before on B-sides. Personally, I’ve always found them to be limp rockers and could happily live without them ever entering my audio field.
