Top Ten All-timers?

This week’s issue of the NME (cover date 08 March 2003) carries a Top 100 list of All-Time Best Albums. And the results are frigging…

The Stone Roses’ eponymous debut album was voted the Best Album of All Time by the writers of NME and nme.com. The poll, conducted for the first time in ten years, saw the Pixies’ ‘Doolittle’ LP, also released in 1989, come in at Number Two. The 1993 winner of the poll, ‘Pet Sounds’ by The Beach Boys, is at Number Three this time.

Elsewhere in the Top Ten, The Strokes represented the Noughties, with 2001’s NME Album Of The Year ‘Is This It’ entering the chart at Seven.

The full Top Ten is:

1. The Stone Roses: ‘The Stone Roses’
2. Pixies: ‘Doolittle’
3. The Beach Boys: ‘Pet Sounds’
4. Television: ‘Marquee Moon’
5. The Beatles: ‘Revolver’
6. Love: ‘Forever Changes’
7. The Strokes: ‘Is This It’
8. The Smiths: ‘The Queen Is Dead’
9. The Velvet Underground: ‘The Velvet Underground & Nico’
10. The Sex Pistols: ‘Never Mind The Bollocks...’

Now, now, what’s this? Are you smeggin’ us? ‘The Stones Roses’ is the Best Album of (rock) Eternity?! Wow, this is great news and one can but congratulate the current generation of… ignoramuses!

Fantasy rock band

BBC’s digital radio station 6 Music asked its listeners for an all-time Fantasy Rock band and this is what they came up with:

Vocal: BONO
Guitar: JIMI HENDRIX
Bass: FLEA
Keyboards: CHRIS MARTIN
Drums: KEITH MOON

We reckon this is pants and for the convenience of confussion propose two lineups, one seasoned and the other a tad fresher.

Veteran division

Vocal: DAVID BOWIE
Guitar: JIMI HENDRIX
Bass: JOHN WETTON (King Crimson)
Keyboards: RICK WAKEMAN (Yes)
Drums: JOHN BONHAM (Led Zeppelin)

Nu-skool:

Vocal: PRINCE
Guitar: TOM MORELLO (AudioSlave)
Bass: NICK OLIVERI (Queens Of The Stone Age)
Keyboards: BRIAN ENO (Roxy Music)
Drums: DAVE GROHL (Foo Fighters)

If you have your own thoughts, keep them to yourself. This is just a little bit of fun.
