Gorky's Zygotic Mynci: 'How I Long To Feel That Summer In My Heart' (Mantra)
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci – The Welsh wizards come up with another set of uber-goodies
God only knows, and Anne Robinson should me made aware, of this critic’s love for Welsh music, from the ladette’n’tits pop of (thankfully) defunct Catatonia to the fake-socialism of Manic Street Preachers… Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci is one of the rare bands that really fly the flag for that country of sheep.
Gorky’s are just the independent ticket and if it were a political party, they should be elected to run the highest office. This lot have never paid attention to any market demands and have continued to make music that draws on the past only to take it to certain timeless places. This is music of alternative that opposes all things bland and insipid.
These dozen songs are like lounging on a terrace with a tall summer drink and overlooking the most beautiful beach on the planet populated with the dream-babes. A semi-orchestral work in places, a la Beach Boys on a straight-day, with nods towards some timeless pop (The Everly Bros?) and a touch of psychedelia. It is such a melodic concoction that draws you in as if put under by the best hypnotist.
The band’s maestro is Euros Childs but his sister Megan is emerging as a bona fide star (check ‘Can Megan’ on the album). Titles like ‘Stood On Gold’, ‘Dead On Aid’, ‘Let Those Blue Skies’ paint the emotional paranoia with all the colours of the rainbow. ‘Idiosyncratic’ this may be but it is neither pretentious (like Spiritualized) nor faux-concerned (Eels spring to mind for no apparent reason) but subtle and layered thoughtfully.
There is certain sense of naiveté and enthusiasm formed by eternal love for making string-laden songs like ‘Where Does Yer Go Now’ to enable one to get lost in the forest of desire. If it weren’t for Euros’s vocals so deeply buried in the mix it would be a perfect album. It is near faultless, at present.
8.75/10
