Madonna, faded to instore appearances? |

Live: Madonna HMV, Oxford St, London Friday, May 9, 2003
Madonna live: madly, deeply, intimately
As Sir Paul McCartney was readying to play a historic pop show at the Rome’s Colosseum, Madonna had already written her small footnote to the pop history by playing her smallest show in London. Yep, the lissom, sexy-mum played her gig at HMV, Oxford Street, London, to 500 happy fans who were whipped into a frenzy during the 30-minute rendition of some new songs and old hits.
Of course, time is of no essence to an über-mega-superstar as Mrs Ritchie and she managed to be 90 minutes late despite living less than a mile from the shop. (Perhaps the beret wouldn’t stay just right on?) Still, the singer, 44, is very eager to promote her new album ‘American Life’ and did another show in Paris for 200 people only! The last time she played London it was in front of a crowd of 100,000 souls at Earls Court!
During this, her only UK gig this year – tour in the offing in 2004 – she fronted a five-piece backing band that included her producer, Mirwais. Launching with the title cut and current hit, ‘American Life’, she performed another four songs from it, plus a 1989 hit ‘Like A Prayer’ and ‘Don’t Tell Me’ from ‘Music’. She played guitar on few tracks and had to start one song, ‘X-Tatic Process’, twice and joked, “You guys are making me nervous.”
50 store guards, more than a dozen police officers and her personal team, swelled the number of fans. Her film directing hubbie, Guy, dutifully watched from the wings. Madonna, dressed in polka-dot navy-blue blouse, told the handful of die-hard fans who had slept on the pavement overnight: “I hope you take that determination, devotion and passion and put it somewhere else in your life. If you want to pat tribute to me then do something important with your life.”
Blimey, sounds just like my mum! And then she added, “I just want you to know how incredibly blessed and lucky I feel to be here right now.”
You really touched us, there!
