Nina Persson shows a darker persona than The Cardigans' one, fatally charming

When a member of a successful band steps out to offer us individual work it is usually a disappointment to fans because they find it difficult to adjust to the change. With The Cardigans having taken time-out from their world popularity, Nina Persson has decided to air her creative alter-ego that even required her to become a brunette.

What we get is an icy cool frontwoman leading her five-piece band exploring some darker side to her character. While The Cardies offer us their formula of poptastic tunes Persson's solo incarnation is a revelation in deep-digging into the troubled nights of heart and soul. Working on the self-titled debut album, due out at the beginning of September, with the country-noir maestro Mark Linkous (otherwise known as Sparklehorse) for production duty, she has managed to capture something really special.

This is exquisitely crafted music that is insight in the intimate recesses of her musical psyche without being downright melancholic or pessimistic; it actually echoes with certain sense of restrained joy. Elegant, sophisticated and somehow fragile, she is the visual epitome of these sounds: soft, personal, torch songs loaded with some serious emotions.

The current single, 'I Can Buy You', as well as 'Angel Of Sadness', 'Frequent Flier', 'Rock'n'Roll Ghost', 'Charlie Charlie', ring with heartbreaking hue that cast a poignant spell over the boys and girls appreciating every breathe she takes.

The only downside to the tonight's performance, in the light of Festival fatigue - five days in two consecutive weekends of which she was also a part at the V2001 - is that the auditorium is one-half full. The 2000-capacity show has had three levels of balconies closed off making the stalls appear well attended. But that had no reflection on the performance, Ms Persson's was a compelling one.
