The Futureheads: furthermore in the right direction

It’s been happening too soon, too quickly and too often for the good of longevity. Kasabian playing Ally Pally after one album, Kaiser Chiefs seen as the saviours of the indie-dom as soon as their debut disc is released, as much ‘heroes’ as Bloc Party and Razorlight… The current buzz are Magic Numbers and [this year’s Franz Ferdinand?] Sons & Daughters…

Now, let’s look four years into the future - even Spice Girls managed half a decade of chart and gossip-column reign… The survivors and regular Top of The Pops toppers are… Shucks, my crystal ball battery is discharged!

It would be a great surprise if The Futureheads were not still attracting interest because they appear to be earning their success rather than having it cultivated for them by diverse means and covert PR manoeuvres. They return after ‘Hounds Of Love’ with a re-launch of a single from their superb, gold-selling self-titled album - ‘Decent Days and Nights’. It is another slice of guitar-pop that really owns a far bit to punky days of The Clash as much as to the New Wave élan The Members had. [Their singer had the best name in the biz - Nicky Tesco!]

Catchy, bouncy, rousing melody keeps you bopping-along happily with the lyrics that take you onto twisted logic and you simply can’t but capitulate. ‘Decent Days and Nights’ is equally instantaneous to chart higher than No. 8 [where ‘Hounds Of Love’ peaked] and yet remain mystical enough to invite repeated re-listens.

To celebrate the release of this 2:43 minutes of euphoria, The Futureheads performed at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on Sunday ahead of the home team’s final game of the season against Stoke City. The band’s reaction to the invitation to play was: “It’s great for us to be playing on such a prestigious day for the club, we’re really excited. Congratulations on your promotion.” [The team was recently promoted to the Premiership - whatever that may be.]

They followed this unique occasion with a set on Radio 1’s Big Weekend stages at Herrington Country Park.

The Futureheads, the top of their rank.
