The Magic Numbers: sunshine vibes for all seasons

It is a grey day outside but the inner-self is still feeling sun-desiccated that was caused by a quartet seen and heard after the last eve’s sundown. The culprits of this feelgood factor are The Magic Numbers, a West London-based outfit who dispense music that appears to have been sired by the West Coast‘s best days with an additional gene for pop models.

The Magic Numbers’ eponymous debut album is full of tunes that sound like being written at some gentler times, with - and for - some bygone sensuality… They recall Crosby Stills Nash and Young with ease, The Beach Boys and The Beatles’ happy pop days… All delicious melodies and harmonies fondle your ear canal; instrumentation is mellow with intricate parts, lo-fi but these songs get under your skin and seize your emotional make-up to rule it like a despot!

The Magic Numbers are two pairs of siblings who do not give a toss about images and selling you songs as sexy appendages… From the last year’s single ‘Hymn For Her’ to the new one, ‘Forever Lost’, it is a beauty-of-songs celebration! It is so gorgeous, every possible minute, every single note… You think of many adjectives and all seem to be inadequate. Perhaps, the most curative sutures for souls and spirits ravaged by the pre-fab ‘music’…

Long-haired and bearded and not the weight-watchers, they look like a throwback to some happier [hippier?] times and yet sound like angels from another dimension. They are not of the teen age, either: Romeo Stodart is 27, Sean Gannon is 29 with their sisters Michelle (bassist/singer) at 22 and Angela (melodica player/singer) at 20. All peripheral, dear, because it is song-based; or, in the words of drummer Sean: “There’s no pretence with us, we obviously don’t have a stylist.”

They do have smiles and sport them all the way through the show. We all do, like this band is dispersing some enchanting potion from their headlining lab.

The Magic Numbers’ chimes are like tailor-made for romantics but, truly, not even petrolheads, such as this one, can complain.

The Magic Numbers - in the name and, nearly, all else.
