Madonna: ''GHV2'' (Maverick/Warner Bros)
Madonna’s second collection of hits is even more impressive bar one song
Madonna is. Madonna does and rules. This 15-track collection, ‘Greatest Hits Volume 2’ (to give it its full title), is a companion to the 1991’s ‘Immaculate Collection’ and brings together all her hits from 1993 to the last year’s ‘Music’ album. And it is a choc-full of goodies.
This covers her ‘dance’ phase, and includes some incredible songs over the years. There is the overtly sexy stuff, such as ‘Erotica’, more romantic are ‘Secret’ and ‘Take A Bow’, an ‘homage-to-Björk’ is ‘Bedtime Story’, or turning fatally beutilicious on ‘Beautiful Strangers’… But, it is tracks that made us all move to the beat that are real forte here, ‘’Frozen’, ‘Ray Of Light’, ‘Don’t Tell Me’ and, most recently, ‘Music’.
Madonna might have a problem with picking film roles, right man or bodyguards, but when it comes to collaborators and music – she has no rival. Britney might admire her for all she wants but she’ll never even become a Madonna-disciple. These songs also are a travel through an incredible array of images and each song has had one.
Another almost immaculate collection and the only downside is ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’ that oddly sits amidst other songs. (At least we are spared version of ‘American Pie’, from whatever movie soundtrack.)
Madonna is the coolest mum, sex-symbol at 42 and a role-model for many a teenagerette. And, still the undisputed Queen of the Hill.
(There is a strong probability that she’ll be prevented from entering the UK charts at No. 1 due to the strong Westlife challenge, according to the mid-week sales report. Even if that is the case, it’s only a temporary glitch because we all know whom history has already marked for inclusion in its hall of greats. Lemme give you a hint: it ain’t an Irish boy-band usually covering former hits for their chart success!)
8.9/10
