Imbru’s secret gig rocks Regent Street
Natalie Imbruglia, the other diminutive Antipodean pop-star, played a secret showcase for the industry bods, independent radio reps and a few fan-clubbers, a couple of hundred people in all, last night at The Eve Club on London’s Regent Street. The show lasted good 50 minutes and it allowed Nat to perform selection from the current ‘White Lillies Island’ and hit-songs from her debut album.
The former hasn’t been as successful as the debut - perhaps her new single, ‘Wrong Impression’, will reverse the fortune of the long-playing disc - and the reason is that the lady has left her pop-roots in the past tense and moved into a more serious waters. It almost parallels what Kylie did some years ago by making an ‘indie album’ that failed to ignite the general interest; Imbruglia often nears the emotional fields of Alanis Morissette with frequent recalling of PJ Harvey and, even, Nick Cave.
All the backing musicians were chair-bound as not to tower over the miniature, but perfectly formed, Ms Imbruglia, who makes ladies and men sick with envy because she reminds us that this is an unjust world where some have the looks and talent while most are short-changed on both counts.
Having never seen her act – I avoid soaps in favour of me-own-living – she demonstrates an ability to project that goes beyond simple song interpretations. Nobody wanted to confirm but we suspect that this was also a tryout for a world tour. It might just be worth seeing her on a normal sized stage; this one was just big enough to house DJ-decks…
And, in case we haven’t mentioned, Nat Imbru is very easy on the old opticals...
