Oasis' first show to celebrate '10 Years Of Noise and Confusion' is a mature and somewhat restrained performance
The size of this auditorium must equal the guest list for the Oasis’ last two shows at Wembley Stadium a couple of summers ago but, it is strange, the band’s fans bring football-terrace-mentality to their shows. Still, the Gallagher brothers and the supporting musicians of four soon rein it in with a set that was great on music but short on show.
Launching the gig with the taped ‘F**kin’ In The Bushes’ it soon settles in a known pattern but strained somewhat. The impression being of a couple having had a few words of disagreement beforehand but still had to visit the in-laws: civilised but tense relationship that really screw up any real enjoyment. Free of any verbal incidents, no four-lettered f-words left any lips and the only moment of disagreement occurs when Liam announces a new song while Liam intro's ‘Live Forever’.
Upon discovering that his older bro is right Liam throws down the setlist in disgust. Otherwise it is just another eve onstage; during the 95 minute show we get a selection of old faves, few surprise inclusions and a couple of new songs. ‘Go Let It Out’ starts the roll-call of hits and we get most of them, from ‘Cigarettes & Alcohol’ (sounding even more like a remake of T-Rex’s ‘Get It On’) to ‘Roll With It’.
The two newies are 'The Hindu Times', sung by Liam, and guitarist Gem-penned ‘Hung In A Bad Place’; the former is based on a sampled loop and Eastern-like melody, the latter is a guitar-heavy song reminiscent of The Stooges or MC5, that ends in a jam so huge to make you forget the song it developed from. Noel handles lead vocals in a couple of segments, even to deliver ‘One Way Road’ live, for the first time ever, as well as ‘She’s Electric’.
At one moment Liam comments that this is "Proper rock not like other rubbish" but Oasis appear to go through motions to deliver a standard set that is received euphorically. ‘Champagne Supernova’ (with f**kin' Paul Weller on geetar!?) gets everybody in the epic mood but the encores of Noel’s ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ and Liam’s vocalising The Beatles’ ‘I’m The Walrus’ fail to reach the same level.
These selective dates celebrate '10 Years Of Noise And Confusion'. Touts were charging 200 squid outside. Some things never change.
