'Gone Fishin'' is ace Wichita collection
Various: '(Three for beaching Pt. I)'
(Assorted)
‘Gone Fishin’’, Mondo Generator, Venom

As sun-worshipping season is well underway the album releases became as rare shade in Mojave, we dig five albums you may consider taking to a beach. Although the whole hype is The Darkness, their debut ‘Permission To Land’ is as genuine as the Bad News were, probably their main inspiration rather than Queen. For the uninitiated, Bad News was the worst comedy undertaking by the otherwise deadly funny Young Ones team although they managed to issue an album and even appear at a Donington Metal Festi!? Still, The Darkness’ Mercury Music Awards’ nomination yesterday confirms that the estimable jury have a sense of humour. (Or, are off their collective rocker!)

The truly brill albums now out are by The Mars Volta, Jane’s Addiction and Dizzee Rascal (for more information see Reviews). Here are another three contenders presented in no particular order but the postmarks.

‘Gone Fishin’ – 3 Years Later… A Wichita Compilation’
(Wichita)

The title explains it all and it is one devilish collection that contains some artists that have made strides since, such as Bright Eyes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but its beauty is being so eclectic to be schizo! Its secret is the label’s ‘strange’ A&R policy that simply – reflects taste and quality. No commercial concerns here… well, obviously, otherwise this wouldn’t be retailing for £2.99!

Other gems amongst tracks are Northern State’s ‘At The Party’, Penfold Plum’s ‘Junkie Tubby’, My Morning Jacket’s ‘Heartbroken Man’; Bury And Disinter’s ‘Part 2’ is a vid-clip.

“As eclectic as a good record collection should be,” a friend said about the label. It cover the disc as well.

Mondo Generator
‘A Drug Problem That Never Existed’
(Ipecac)

Nick Oliveri, bassist and onstage nudist of Queens Of The Stone Age, issues second album by his side-proj, a follow-up to the 2000’s debut. Oliveri is a former member of Kyuss and Dwarves and his past is punkish as cuts such as ‘F.Y. I’m Free’ (Stooges-like) and ‘Jr High Love’ demonstrate.

QotSA fellows Josh Homme and Mark Lanegan make guest appearances but this is Oliveri’s gig and his warped sense of humour comes to fore on Ted Nugent-esque ‘Like Your Want’. Otherwise, diversity and volume. As for the title, our editor recalls interviewing the band onboard the tour bus, and although only inhaling he had to be helped out, because it looked like the smoke-machine was working overtime…

Venom
‘Witching Hour’
(Demolition Records)

You may think we have taken a leaf out of Nick Oliveri’s funny-rulebook but no, we are serious. Venom are genuine metal muthas, circa 1979, and really show what extreme, anti-corporate spirit is all about. ‘Witching Hour’ contains live tracks from their ‘Prime Evil Tour’ – without overdubs, simply capturing the raw and frightening energy of the band – and unseen footage from the studio rehearsals.

If you take this to the beach it would annoy arse off Germans who towel-book their recliners!
