Funeral For A Friend: 'Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation' (Infectious/WEA)
Slipped Disc #3: Funeral For A Friend
Funeral For A Friend’s debut album ‘Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation’ is full of vigorous servings of a post-hardcore rock portions that speak international language. For whatever vague reason the Brit-rockers have been making some insular music that continually fails to attract appreciation of the worldwide market. The originators of decades ago have been succeeded by generations who have mainly copied, and not that successfully, their American counterparts.
For such a long time no Brit-band could connect with a kid in a backwater Ohio and without it, you have local megastars like Robbie Williams rather than Slipknot of Leeds! FFAF should rectify it all because they can parlay global rock lingo as if it were their native tongue. ‘Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation’ takes the modern US idiom, applies UK roots and influenced before twisting it all into intriguing shapes; developing its own identity while killing you loudly and powerfully.
For the most part as they can do true emo: ‘Your Revolution Is A Joke’ sounds much better than 95 per cent of what Coldplay put out as ‘rock’! Valley-sized rocking is realised on ‘Bullet Theory’ [an ode to US/UK foreign policies?], ‘Juneau’, ‘Moment Forever Faded’, the guitar-poptastic ‘She Drove Me To Daytime Television’...
There are lesser moments [‘Bend Your Arms To Look Like Wings’ for one with its laboured arrangement] but the epic scope of ‘Red Is The New Black’ confirms that these boys have a lot of talent stored up and the future looks like an open country lane to rock’s Valhalla.
FFAF is, as the disc’s opening track states, ‘Rookie of The Year’.
