Bad News: The Darkness' prototype
Bad News + Coal Chamber: 'Bad News' + 'The Best of Coal Chamber'
(EMI + Roadrunner)
Two re-releases to inform & amuze...

A few weeks ago even ingenuity of Sherlock Holmes's calibre couldn't locate a new release of some worth - Charlotte Hatherely’s ’Grey Will Fade’ was fine for acne-exploding Ash fans but it wasn’t pumping gas; our sanity was saved by two re-releases that should have shaken your stormy clouds, as well.

Coal Chamber
‘The Best Of…’
(Roadrunner)

There are seven definitive ‘Roots of Roadrunner’ discs in this ‘Best Of’ mid-price series from the bands that have helped shape the label, as well as the HM sound, with liner notes from musicians that have been heavily influenced by them. All CD's are remastered and include many rare and unseen photos: Annihilator, Life of Agony, Brujeria, Kind Diamond, Deicide, Madball, Malevolent Creation, Mercyful Fate and…

…Coal Chamber - the first in the series. In five short years this quarter managed to bring new energy to Nu-Metal with raw, brutal, down-tuned and sexy tunes. [Bass players certainly raised the quotient…]

Unjustly likened to Pantera and White Zombie, their rock was rougher and meaner with sprinkling of Goth, Hip-hop, and hardcore. They scored a U.S. Gold album and Kerrang! Award for Best International Newcomer with their classic 1997 debut.

Full track listing: 1. Loco - 2. Oddity - 3. Big Truck (Hand-On-Wheel Mix) - 4. Sway - 5. Clock - 6. Not Living - 7. El Cu Cuy - 8. Tyler's Song - 9. My Mercy - 10. Fiend - 11. Watershed - 12. Something Told Me - 13. Dark Days - 14. Beckoned - 15. One Step (Chop Shop Mix)

Bad News
'Bad News'
(EMI)

The high point of this 'band'’s turbulent career was an appearance at the Donington Metal Fest where they were pelted with everything imaginable. In an unprecedented act of admiration... ["Don't HM fans have sense of humour?" asks my invisible friend.] Anyhow, inspired and encouraged by the Spinal Tap's ruling the world, the Brit counterpart [Comic Strip quartet] decided to take the Yanks on, plectrum-sharpened!

Bad News is the only band that dared suggest they could do a better job of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' than Queen whilst also having the honesty to entitle their festive single ‘Cashing In On Christmas’, that also produced an album that stands alongside ‘Smell The Glove’ and ‘Permission To Land’ as an example of truly awesome Rawk’n’Roll.

Featuring the classic tunes ‘Hey Hey Bad News’ and ‘Warriors Of Ghengis Khan’, the self-titled debut album from one of Britain’s finest bands is a feast for anyone in love with the power of a guitar, pose and a wig. Genuinely funny, for the difference from the high-brow approach of the Spinals.

Warp 9.9 [Erm, it is a comedy album after all!]
