Dead Fly Buchowski takes off - NOW!
Dead Fly Buchowski: 'Land Of The Rough'
(Beggars Banquet)
Dead Fly Buchowski: spaced-out blues-rock gala

Something is cooking in the minds of disaffected youth and we love the sound of it! Guitar sounds are on the rise, the brave new world explored again by youth dissatisfied by the mainstream music that started to appeal to their parents and younger siblings. A neighbour’s four-year-old likes The Chemical Brothers’ latest single which, frankly - smells like a toddler spirit!

There is a salvation, slowly rising from its underground pit with plenty of examples around the world. Whether it is the avant-rockism in the shape of Modey Lemon, Electrelane, Scout Niblett or something more rockingly traditional, such as - Dead Fly Buchowski. Their debut disc ‘Land Of The Rough’ straddles the past and the future to end up sounding like very few bands around. Imagine the Hawkwind stoned on XXI century, Black Sabbath polluted by post-modern chemicals or Dr Feelgood drunk of alco-smoothies!

DFB’s roots are obviously rebellious days when rockers stood tall and challenged the pop norm. It is a bit neo-bluesy, a tad psychedelic, all-rocking: ‘Anyway’ drives deeper into the space-time continuum whilst the singer is losing it in the best Paul Rodgers/Jim Morrison fashion. It may not be the pivotal song here but we are loving it ‘round this camp fire! ‘Blackout’ plays more with its rhythm but the frenzied guitar takes it near the Led Zeppelin’s neighbourhood!

From the opening [second single] ‘Russian Doll’ it sparkles with droplets of perspiration-inducing vocals, it is a fest of guitars - melodic, riffing, soulful - always majestic. It pushes boundaries by encompassing punk, emo and plenty of other genres. It is an open calling-card that shouldn’t easily be classed as any single thing. The possible reason is that this is an international quartet, with singer Roddy Campbell from Scotland, guitarist Tom Davis from Ireland, bassist Michael Thorpe from London and drummer Simon Hofer from Austria.

The band came together in Glasgow. ‘Land Of The Rough’ (the title is Simon's father's affectionate name for Scotland) was originally recorded in Spring 2003 with local (Scottish) producer Chris Gordon, independently and for an amount that is probably less than Guns N’Roses’ pizza tips! The record took about 6 months to complete, and was finally released in January 2004.

After being picked up by their current label, the album was remixed by producer Mark Williams in late 2004 to provide a more defined and finer sheen, with a couple of tracks - 'Hope Is Treasure', 'Overcast' - taken out and a few new ones - 'Russian Doll', 'Pandemonium' and the ear-blistering 'Blacker Than Blue' - added in.

Forget [Butch] Queen with Paul Rodgers fronting, for DFB we predict a [further] riot because this is the ‘Land of The Rough’… diamond!

8/10
