Snoop Dogg's 'The (Gangsta) Masterpiece' |
|
Snoop Dogg: 'R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece' (Star Trak/Interscope)
Snoop Dogg: some more of the same
The Dogg-father [of revival?] is back with a brand new album entitled 'R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece'. It's his seventh studio album, released through Snoop's own imprint Doggy Style and his new label home The Neptune's Star Trak label.
Like Snoop's last hit - the classic 'Beautiful' new single 'Drop It Like It's Hot' features vocals from super N*E*R*D Pharrell and is produced by The Neptunes. 'Drop It…' has a hook that buries itself into your brain with those unmistakable killer Neptunes beats. Several other tracks on 'R&G' have been produced by The Neptunes including a collaboration with the moment- man - Justin Timberlake. Also on production duties are Jelly Roll, Suparfly and Lil' Jon who, as well as producing, (and Trina) guest (alongside Trina) on another cut, 'Step Yo Game Up'.
There is a scene in the latest Spike Lee movie, ‘She Hate Me’, when a mafia boss, played by John Torturro, talks about rappers to the main AA (African-American) character and comments how they pretend to be ‘gangsta’ like Mafiosi but they only are - acting! He also calls him Snoop Doggy which, for non-comic interested, devalues him to a - cartoon role.
Snoop Dogg continues to paint his fictionalised ‘ghetto’ the same way Eminem sources his ‘trailer-park’ world, from a memory, imagined, made-up. Thus, as consequential as the last sunny day.
Now, tagging it ‘The Masterpiece’, one is biggin’ it in even by the rap-standard. The fact is that he is far from it but the second rate music icon trying to sell us clichés about everything that’s been passé for decades already.
Snoop in, mostly, dozing mode. As concerning as - a domani sans hotdogs!
6/10
